Warm, Aged Color Without Waiting for the Ages
JAX Brown Darkener creates a warm antique-brown finish on brass, bronze, and copper. It reacts directly with clean, bare metal, making it useful for aging new pieces, emphasizing textures, and adding depth to stamped, cast, or fabricated jewelry.
The finish develops quickly and can be polished back to highlight raised areas while leaving darker color in recesses. If you remove more color than intended, simply clean the piece and apply it again. Patina is forgiving that way, even when the person holding the brush is not.
Why We Like It
* Produces an antique-brown finish on brass, bronze, and copper
* Adds contrast to stamped, textured, and dimensional metal
* May be brushed, sponged, or applied by dipping
* Can be polished back to create highlighted areas
* Additional applications can deepen the color
* Cold-applied. No heating required
* Made in the USA
* Sold in a 2 fl. oz. bottle
How to Use
1. Remove all lacquer, wax, oil, grease, and other coatings from the metal.
2. Wash the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry.
3. Wearing suitable protective equipment, apply JAX Brown with a bristle brush, sponge, or cloth. The object may also be dipped into the solution.
4. Watch the reaction carefully. Remove or rinse the product when the metal becomes slightly darker than the desired finished color.
5. Rinse the piece thoroughly with fresh water and dry.
6. Use fine Scotch-Brite, steel wool, or a polishing cloth to relieve raised areas and create the desired contrast.
7. Rinse again and dry completely.
8. The finished surface may be protected with an appropriate wax, oil, or clear lacquer.
If too much color is removed during polishing, JAX Brown may be reapplied.
Application Notes
* Use JAX Brown at full strength when applying it with a brush, sponge, or cloth.
* For dipping applications, the product may be diluted with water to slow the reaction and provide greater control. There is no single dilution ratio suitable for every project, so test your mixture and timing on scrap metal first.
* Do not leave the piece in contact with the solution longer than necessary.
* The product must reach bare metal to work properly. It will not react evenly through lacquer, wax, oil, or another protective coating.
* Always test on scrap or a small inconspicuous area before treating the entire piece.
* Results will vary according to the alloy, surface preparation, application method, dilution, and exposure time.
* Use only plastic, glass, or another suitable non-metal application container.
* Do not return used solution to the original bottle.
* Never mix JAX Brown with other chemical products.
