When bright, shiny metal is being entirely too cheerful, Liver of Sulfur can give it some age, depth and character.

Griffith Liver of Sulfur is a traditional patina compound used to darken silver, copper and brass. Depending on the metal, solution strength and application time, it can produce colors ranging from warm golds and browns to deep gray or black.

It is useful for emphasizing texture, bringing out recessed details and creating antique or oxidized finishes. Several controlled applications may be used to gradually deepen the color.

General Use
Make sure the metal is clean and free of oil, wax, lacquer and polishing residue.

In a properly ventilated work area, dissolve only the amount needed in warm water according to the manufacturer’s directions. Apply the prepared solution to the metal with an appropriate swab or immerse the piece as directed. Additional applications may be made to deepen the finish.

Rinse the piece thoroughly after the desired color has developed and dry completely. Results will vary depending on the alloy, surface preparation, solution strength, water temperature and application time. Testing on scrap or an inconspicuous area is recommended.
