The Classic Jewelry Pickle
Sparex No. 2 is a granular dry-acid pickling compound used to remove surface oxidation, heat scale, and flux residue from gold, silver, copper, brass, and other copper-based alloys after soldering or annealing.

Mix it with water to create a traditional jeweler’s pickle solution, then use it warm in a dedicated pickle pot. It helps clean metal after torch work without mechanical scrubbing and reaches recessed areas that are difficult to clean with a brush.

A 10 oz. package makes approximately one quart of prepared pickle solution.

Why It Belongs on the Bench
* Removes surface oxidation and scale after soldering or annealing
* Helps dissolve stubborn flux residue
* Suitable for gold, silver, copper, brass, and copper-based alloys
* Granular form is convenient to store and mix as needed
* Works in recessed, textured, and difficult-to-reach areas
* Intended for use in a dedicated heated pickle pot
* A practical alternative to working with liquid sulfuric acid
* Made in the USA
* Package contains 10 oz.

Mixing the Solution
For a full-strength batch, slowly add the contents of one 10 oz. package to approximately 24 fl. oz. of warm water to make approximately one quart of prepared solution.

Always add Sparex to the water slowly. Never pour water onto the dry compound. Stir carefully until dissolved while avoiding splashing and airborne dust.

Follow the instructions supplied with the product and use an acid-resistant, nonreactive container or dedicated pickle pot.

For best performance maintain the prepared solution at approximately 125–135°F. Do not boil.

How to Use
1. Allow the soldered or annealed piece to cool and quench it before placing it in the pickle.
2. Place the piece into the warm prepared solution using copper tongs.
3. Leave it in the solution until the oxidation and flux residue have been removed.
4. Remove the piece with copper tongs.
5. Rinse the metal thoroughly with clean water.
6. Neutralize and finish the piece according to your normal studio procedure.

Pickling time will vary according to the metal, the amount of oxidation, the age and strength of the solution, and its operating temperature.

Important Bench Notes
* Use copper tongs or another pickle-compatible tool. Do not use steel tweezers.
* Steel can contaminate the pickle and cause copper to deposit onto other metal placed in the solution.
* Do not place spring rings, lobster clasps, or other findings containing steel springs into the pickle.
* Use a dedicated, acid-resistant pickle pot and nonreactive tools.
* Do not use the pickle pot or its utensils for food.
* Keep the solution warm, but never allow it to boil.
* Keep the container covered when it is not being used.
* Do not mix Sparex with bleach, household cleaners, strong bases, or other chemical products.
* Follow local requirements for disposing of spent pickle solution. Do not pour it into a drain without confirming that disposal is permitted in your area.
